MARTIAL ARTS FESTIVAL PARIS 2008

   Like every year, the french magazine Karate-Bushido organized in Paris "Le festival des arts-martiaux", one of the most important show in the world of martial-arts.
   This year, in cooperation with IKO Honbu and the French Kyokushin Karate Organization, a special demonstration by top european fighters was presented. Alejandro Navarro (Spain), Lucian Gogonel (Romania), Krzysztof Habraszka (Poland), Zahari Damyanov (Bulgaria) and Julien Portiere (France) showed their special techniques breaking the boards and presenting their fighting combinations. Next, a mini tournament with exhibition matches took place, whe winner of which was current open category European Champion - Alejandro Navarro. Finally, Emil Kostov (Bulgaria) - former World Weight Category Champion made tameshiwari demonstration, breaking the ice blocks.
   Eurosport TV is planning to show a report from this event, which took place in Paris Bercy, on the evening of March 29.


SYLWESTER SYPIEN ENDS HIS SPORT'S CAREER

   On February 9th an International Match 'Europe vs Poland' took place in Wroclaw (Poland) on occasion of the ending of a sport's carrer of 3-time European and 7-times Polish Champion - Sylwester Sypien. The event was opened by the President of Wroclaw.

   In the tournament participated: current world open weight vice champion Jan Soukup (Czech Republic), 3 time world champion Ewa Pawlikowska (Poland), brown medalist of world championships Zurine Eciolaza (Spain), several time European champions: Alejandro Navarro (Spain), Tomasz Najduch (Poland), Javier Lezcano (Spain), Krzysztof Habraszka (Poland) and Piotr Moczydłowski (Poland), as well as European championships medalist: Pablo Estensoro (Spain), Nicolae Stoian (Romania), Michal Krzak (Poland) and Karol Ciesluk (Poland). After many equal fights the Polish team defeated the European team 13:11.

   Shihan Andre Drewniak was the main judge. The fights were judged by: E. Konstancia (Holland), L. Lezcano (Spain), W. Munzer (Germany), M. Kubek (Austria), S. Urbanczyk (Germany),  J. Czerniec (Poland) and W. Stolarczyk (Poland). Technical judges were: Shihan W. Roj (Poland) and sensei E. Urbanczyk (Poland) as well as sensei B. Lubos (Poland).

   The match was organised by Wroclaw 'Masutatsu Oyama' Kyokushin Karate Club led by sensei Jacek Lamot.


EUROPEAN TEAM

   During the 9th World Open Karate Tournament, special meeting of EKKO country leaders took place in Tokyo. It was lead by Shihan Loek Hollander - IKO International Committee Member and EKKO Board Members: Shihan Antonio Pinero (President), Shihan Andre Drewniak (General Secretary) and Sensei Christoph Fischer (Treasurer).
   The main subject of discussion was creating of European Team, which will consist of 8 top fighters in each weight category and specially selected young talented fighters. Regular training camps are planned in Bulgaria, thanks to co-operation with sponsor of Bulgarian Kyokushin Karate Organisation lead by Sensei Hristo Traikov.
   First camp, with participation of 30 fighters and 8 coaches had place in Varna before the World Tournament. The first training session was lead by Dutch coaches: Shihan Hollander and Shihan Constancia, next were led by Shihan Drewniak and Sensei Roj (Poland), Shihan Pinero and Sensei Navarro (Spain) and Sensei Traikov and Sensei Asenov (Bulgaria). Main purpose of it was exchanging of training experience, focusing on fighting combinations and mitts excersises. EKKO Board expressed gratefulness to organiser of this successful project - Sensei Traikov.

THE 9TH WORLD OPEN KARATE TOURNAMENT TOKYO 2007

   The 9th World Open Karate Tournament took place on the weekend of November 16-18, in Tokyo Gymnasium, Japan.
   Kancho Shokei Matsui made the official opening of the tournament, which gathered 192 competitors from all over the world and thousands of spectators. IKO Kyokushinkaikan was the organiser.
   Team of 32 european fighters represented the old continent. Special meeting of EKKO country leaders took place in Tokyo, and was lead by Shihan Loek Hollander - IKO International Committee Member and EKKO Board Members: Shihan Antonio Pinero (President), Shihan Andre Drewniak (General Secretary) and Sensei Christoph Fischer (Treasurer).

The number one pretender to World Champion title - Ewerton Teixeira from Brazil did not disappoint his fans and won all his 8 fights, to stand on the top of the world. While his championship was foreseeable, all other results seemed to be great surprise for everybody. Who could predict that only one Japanese and two Russians will advance to top 8 ? Who could guess three Europeans will be there instead? Who could say that Lechi Kurbanov will not make it to top 16 ? And finally, who could suppose that Jan Soukup will advance up to the grand final ?

THREE EUROPEANS IN TOP 8 OF THE WORLD !!!

   Most of this suprises were made by Europeans. First, current European Champion Alejandro Navarro (Spain) stopped the former All Japan Champion - Kentaro Tanaka. Next, Zahari Damianov (Bulgaria) won with Japan's number one - Yoshiaki Uchida. Then, Artur Hovhannisian (Armenia) scored Ippon in his quarter-final fight with 'Russian bull' - Andrei Stepin. Finally, the 'dark horse' of this tournament Jan Soukup (Czech R.) beat Unezhev from Russia, who had won with Brazilian World Middleweight Champion Andrews Nakahara. Next he won with Tanaka (Brazil) and Hovhannisian to reach the final and become the World Vice-Champion.
   Probably the most even bout of this tournament was the semi-final between 'two white samurai' - Hovhannisian and Soukup. Both of them has spent couple of years training in Japan. Eventually Artur,  the instructor of Honbu Dojo had to accept the superiority of Jan, who has been training in Kagoshima with the former World Champion Hitoshi Kiyama.
   In the final fight, Ewerton Teixeira unanimously showed that the World Champion title should belong to him, scoring Ippon with powerfull gedan-mawashi-geri, that stopped the courageous Jan Soukup.

This results proved the continuous developement of Kyokushin Karate in Europe. According to what former World Champion Shihan Francisco Filho said during the European Summer Camp this year 'now it is time for Europe'.


INTERNATIONAL BUDO GALA ZAGREB 2007

   On October 26, the French FKOK organization leaded a demonstration in Zagreb (Croatia) during the International Budo Gala organised by Branko Cikatic and the press group Satori Verlag.
   Sensei Bertrand Kron, Senpai Vlada Kron and Jerome de Timmerman performed Kata Sushiho, Bunkai, Kumite and Tameshiwari. Thousands of people in the hall applaused and enjoyed this demonstration.
