The number one pretender to World Champion title - Ewerton Teixeira from Brazil did not disappoint his fans and won all his 8 fights, to stand on the top of the world. While his championship was foreseeable, all other results seemed to be great surprise for everybody. Who could predict that only one Japanese and two Russians will advance to top 8 ? Who could guess three Europeans will be there instead? Who could say that Lechi Kurbanov will not make it to top 16 ? And finally, who could suppose that Jan Soukup will advance up to the grand final ?

THREE EUROPEANS IN TOP 8 OF THE WORLD !!!

Artur Hovhannisian , Alejandro Navarro and Jan Soukup

Most of this suprises were made by Europeans. First, current European Champion Alejandro Navarro (Spain) stopped the former All Japan Champion - Kentaro Tanaka. Next, Zahari Damianov (Bulgaria) won with Japan's number one - Yoshiaki Uchida. Then, Artur Hovhannisian (Armenia) scored Ippon in his quarter-final fight with 'Russian bull' - Andrei Stepin. Finally, the 'dark horse' of this tournament Jan Soukup (Czech R.) beat Unezhev from Russia, who had won with Brazilian World Middleweight Champion Andrews Nakahara. Next he won with Tanaka (Brazil) and Hovhannisian to reach the final and become the World Vice-Champion.
Probably the most even bout of this tournament was the semi-final between 'two white samurai' - Hovhannisian and Soukup. Both of them has spent couple of years training in Japan. Eventually Artur,  the instructor of Honbu Dojo had to accept the superiority of Jan, who has been training in Kagoshima with the former World Champion Hitoshi Kiyama.
In the final fight, Ewerton Teixeira unanimously showed that the World Champion title should belong to him, scoring Ippon with powerfull gedan-mawashi-geri, that stopped the courageous Jan Soukup.

This results proved the continuous developement of Kyokushin Karate in Europe. According to what former World Champion Shihan Francisco Filho said during the European Summer Camp this year 'now it is time for Europe'.
